Hands-On, Minds-On Science
This two-part video supports the implementation of student-centred, enquiry-based teaching to meet the outcomes of the current elementary science curriculum in Nova Scotia. In part one (Grade P-1), Bonnie MacPhee discusses how she presents a unit of Water & Capacity in her combined P-1 Class. In part two (Grade 5), Heather Rhodenizer discusses in detail how she presents a unit on Simple Machines and integrates her science class with other elements of the grade 5 curriculum. Both teachers explain the value of a hands-on approach in nurturing scientific curiosity and engaging very young students of science.
